The SRP’s South-West Regional Committee hosted a successful event at Dillington House, Somerset, Wednesday 4th October 2017. The event ‘Practicalities of Working with High Activity Sources’ drew upon the expertise of speakers from a variety of sectors.
The event presented delegates with the opportunity to hear from experts in the field of HASS production, transport, medical and industrial uses, site clean-up and disposal. In addition to providing CPD, the event also provided attendees with an excellent opportunity to network in a beautiful historic setting. It is considered therefore that the South West Regional group met the charter objectives of promoting knowledge of radiation protection, and, through the networking opportunities, encouraging best practice.
Planning has already commenced for a two day event to be held at Dillington House 2th – 4th October 2018. The title will be confirmed shortly and publicised accordingly.
The South-West Regional Committee have been lucky to draw on a team of enthusiastic volunteers at Devonport Royal Dockyard to prepare the annual meetings. I would like to take this opportunity to thank both the committee members (Alec Brannan (Secretary), Steve Hutson and Mike Scott) and the admin team at SRP who have helped make the event a success.

SRP once again ran the very popular “source Security” Training Course at Dillington House Somerset, the day following the SW Regional Conference. Over 60 delegates registered for the day, and 36 sat the optional assessment.
Course Coordinator Tony Peters said”: “It’s very pleasing that once again SRP has been able to meet the needs of radiation protection professionals in the UK. This one day course provides delegates with all they need to meet RPA2000’s expectations on radioactive source security, and more. It is fitting that SRP has within its membership experts on the various aspects of this subject, including policing”. The curriculum covers the politics of terrorism, threat, regulation of source security in the UK and a “bonus” radiological transport security component for which we were pleased to have help from ONR this time.
The day comprises a series of presentations and exercises delivered by SRP members Tony Peters, Angela Wright and Graeme Morrice, and Chris Englefield. Peter Swann of Eckert & Ziegler gave a fascinating insight as guest lecturer into the implications of the UK’s mandatory regime for industry.
It is estimated that more than 50 per cent of all RWAs and RWAs in development from across the UK have now been through this course and future iterations are likely as long as there is demand from the profession.
