Topspeed Couriers : "Trusted by professionals"
Interview Date: April 2021
What is your name and role?

Stephen Clegg, CEO.

What does Topspeed do?

It offers specialist courier services for High Consequence Goods.

Where are you based?

Our Head Office and Operations Hub is in Winsford, in Cheshire, although our team of employed drivers is located across the UK.

What was the first service Topspeed provided.

Our first job was on the 4th February 1985 and involved an 8-mile job from Alderley Edge to Knutsford in Cheshire.

What is the latest service?

We now provide secure storage-in-transit for radioactive material, and dual-temperature controlled transport.

Tell us about this latest service.

At our Winsford Operations Hub we have a secure radioactive store that is controlled by key-holder and chain-of-custody rules.  The Hub benefits from external and internal CCTV, and is manned around-the-clock.

What has been the most memorable SRP conference you have attended and why?

The Annual Conference in Scarborough, as this was the first SRP conference we attended.

What do you enjoy most about attending SRP conferences?

Meeting people in the industry.

What's your most popular giveaway at conferences?!

Information! We like to share our knowledge and expertise of transport within this highly regulated environment.

Who might we meet on your stand?

Joanna Pearson (Commercial Manager), Peter Osbaldeston (Training & Compliance Officer), and myself.

Describe your organisation in three adjectives

Professional, efficient, reliable.

Do you have a mission statement?

Trusted by professionals.

Do you support a particular charity?
We typically support local charities and community ventures within the Cheshire region, for example by being a sponsor of the annual Wincle Fete and Trout Run. We do not always 'stay local' however.  Last year we helped in the rescue of animals caught in the catastrophic Australian wildfires. The UK Crafters organisation, whose members made pads, pouches, nest and wraps used to help with the care of animals, were overwhelmed with the enormous response from crafters, so Topspeed helped them by transporting goods from the hubs to London Heathrow free of charge.
And Topspeed is also involved in the Pledge Partnership?

Yes, Topspeed, through Commercial Director Dave Turner, has been actively participating in two local Pledge programmes. The Pledge Partnership enables businesses to work together with educators to provide every young person in the area with everything they need to succeed in the world of work. To date Topspeed has supported a local careers fair and acted as a Dragons Den style mentor, advising groups of school leavers on projects to raise charitable funds.

Why are you an Affiliated Organisation?

In our opinion, SRP is the best organisation we have found where we can meet existing and prospective clients, talk to regulators, and better understand the technical nuances of the industry.

How has Covid-19 affected your business?

Since April 2020 Topspeed’s annual turnover has doubled.  We have expanded into warehousing, set up a new PPE and Biomedical pick-and-pack service, and have spent almost £1m renewing, increasing, and customising our fleet.

What's the best thing about your organisation?

The people we employ.

Do you have any funny stories?

Lots of ‘em, come to our stand at the next conference and ask us again.  Chatham House rules apply – what is said in the room stays in the room!

Finally, what question haven't we asked you, that we should have done?

Where are The 39 Steps?

So, where are The 39 Steps?!

I don’t know, seen the film several times but never figured it out!
